SmartLunch is a platform that facilitates meal provision for employees in large-scale warehouses and factories across Poland, addressing the challenge of offering meals without the expense of building on-site cafeterias. It employs an on-site kiosk system that enables employees to order meals from local restaurants, which are then delivered directly to their workplace, even in remote areas with limited internet connectivity. Initially relying on Apache Kafka and ZooKeeper for its queue management, SmartLunch faced challenges with the complexity and maintenance of this system. The company switched to Redpanda, a faster and API-compatible solution, allowing seamless integration without altering existing code. This transition simplified their architecture, reduced operational burdens, and allowed the team to focus on strategic goals like international expansion, thereby enhancing both cost-effectiveness for employers and affordability for employees.
