From ReDoc to Redoc.ly
Blog post from Redocly
ReDoc, originally developed by Rebilly to address the limitations of existing documentation engines for their API, has evolved into a widely adopted open-source project for generating OpenAPI-powered documentation without vendor-specific extensions. With strong community engagement, ReDoc has become a standard for three-panel OpenAPI documentation, prompting the creation of a spin-off company, Redoc.ly, to further democratize API documentation portals. Redoc.ly aims to offer a developer-friendly, markdown-powered solution integrated with version control systems, allowing for extensive customization without vendor lock-in. The new venture, led by Rebilly's founder Adam Altman, seeks to expand beyond markdown-based documentation by leveraging OpenAPI for interactive and user-friendly documentation portals. The team has rewritten ReDoc in React, built and tested a prototype internally, and is preparing for a future release while seeking community input on essential features for API documentation portals.
