WHIP (WebRTC HTTP Ingestion Protocol) and WHEP (WebRTC HTTP Egress Protocol) are new protocols within the WebRTC ecosystem designed to streamline real-time communication by simplifying connection setups, which traditionally involved complex, multi-step signaling processes. WHIP focuses on the publisher side, allowing media streams to be sent to servers with a single HTTP request, reducing latency and complexity, thus enhancing scalability and compatibility with existing web infrastructures. Meanwhile, WHEP simplifies the subscriber side by enabling near-instant video stream playback with a single HTTP POST call, improving playback reliability and startup speed. Together, they offer developers and enterprises a more efficient approach to managing and scaling live streaming workflows, particularly in distributed environments like those using Kubernetes, by reducing dependencies and enabling flexible configurations. While still in draft form, these protocols promise significant improvements in ease of management, integration, and scalability, especially for applications requiring ultra-low latency streaming.
