RTSP and WebRTC serve complementary roles in real-time video systems: RTSP is widely used for controlling and ingesting streams from IP cameras, NVRs, encoders, drones, and industrial devices, while WebRTC is designed for low-latency, encrypted, interactive audio and video delivery to browsers and applications. RTSP commonly relies on RTP and RTCP for media transport and monitoring, whereas WebRTC uses signaling, ICE for NAT traversal, DTLS, and SRTP to establish secure real-time connections. Neither protocol is universally faster or better, as latency and performance depend on factors such as encoding, buffering, network conditions, codecs, server topology, and playback implementation. Because modern browsers generally cannot play RTSP streams directly, many deployments use a media server or gateway to ingest RTSP video and distribute it as WebRTC, preserving existing camera infrastructure while enabling browser-based viewing. Secure implementations require strong authentication, restricted device access, encrypted signaling and media, authorization controls, monitoring, and testing across the full streaming path. RTSP and WebRTC can also coexist with protocols such as RTMP, SRT, and HLS, with the appropriate choice determined by the source device, destination, network environment, latency needs, scalability requirements, and level of viewer interactivity.
