Summary

Railway reported that a targeted security incident between October 20 and 22, 2026 resulted in unauthorized access to portions of its internal systems, with evidence suggesting the attacker sought AI-provider and platform API keys for possible model-distillation activity. The company paused builds and deployments, while existing customer services remained online, as it investigated privilege-escalation paths, revoked access, rotated credentials, and worked with external forensic experts, authorities, and affected vendors. Railway said encrypted environment variables from up to 1.85% of workspaces, roughly 100,000, may have been exposed and that a subset could have been decrypted after the attacker accessed credentials in its CI environment, although individual user accounts were not accessed and any source-code exposure remains under investigation. It notified vendors including GitHub, GitLab, Anthropic, OpenAI, Stripe, and others to revoke potentially affected keys, sometimes broadly as a precaution, and advised all customers with secrets stored before October 21 to rotate sensitive variables, restrict public database access, and review relevant audit logs. Railway stated that it restored builds and APIs after rebuilding and hardening affected infrastructure, introducing single-tenant build environments, rotating storage and internal credentials, and validating that the identified escalation patterns could no longer be reproduced.
