Railway's transition from relying on Google Cloud Platform to building its own data center infrastructure, known as the Railway Metal project, was driven by the need to overcome constraints and issues associated with hyperscaler platforms. The project involved setting up the first site in California and expanding to more regions, emphasizing the importance of efficient power usage, reliable network connections, and redundancy to ensure resilience. Key challenges included selecting the right space, managing power and cooling needs, configuring network connections with ISPs, and ensuring efficient cabling and rack setups. The process, likened more to building a house than traditional software infrastructure, highlighted the necessity of detailed planning, documentation, and professional installation. Despite initial challenges, Railway successfully laid the groundwork for a self-managed, infra-less cloud experience, and plans to further develop software tools like Railyard and MetalCP to streamline future expansions and infrastructure management.
