From registrar to deployed: buying a domain inside Railway

Railway has streamlined the process of acquiring and configuring custom domains by allowing users to search, purchase, and manage domains directly through its platform, thus eliminating the friction of dealing with external registrars. Previously, integrating a custom domain into Railway required manual DNS setup, including adding TXT and CNAME records, which could be tedious and error-prone. Now, Railway has introduced a one-click DNS setup for Cloudflare-managed domains, leveraging the Domain Connect protocol to automate the addition of DNS records. Users can search for domains directly within Railway, and the system suggests available options using advanced algorithms, with caching and a websocket-based API to ensure fast performance. Once purchased, the domain is automatically registered with WHOIS privacy, configured, and connected to the user's service, greatly simplifying the process and reducing the need for manual intervention. While the current setup does not support domain transfers between workspaces or manual DNS record management, these features may be addressed in the future to further enhance user experience.
