Cloud database platforms should support more than simple provisioning as applications grow, with key production capabilities including high availability and automatic failover, point-in-time recovery, connection management, extensibility, database-specific observability, testable backups, straightforward upgrades, and private network proximity to application compute. Railway presents its managed Postgres and MySQL services as meeting these requirements while allowing teams to begin with a single database and add resilience later. Its Postgres offering includes configurable high-availability clusters using Patroni, etcd, and HAProxy; pgBackRest-based point-in-time recovery; PgBouncer connection pooling; support for extensions such as pgvector, PostGIS, and TimescaleDB; detailed query and database health metrics; staged backup restoration; and guided major-version upgrades. Railway’s MySQL service offers Group Replication-based high availability, an optional binary-log-based point-in-time recovery workflow, built-in or plugin-based specialized capabilities, extensive workload metrics, staged backups, and user-managed version upgrades. Both databases are private by default within Railway environments, allowing applications and databases to communicate over an internal network while public access remains optional.
