You Migrated VMware Workloads to Amazon EKS. Here Are the 8 Things to Set Up Next
Blog post from Qovery
After migrating VMware workloads to Amazon EKS, teams should treat the move as the beginning of platform operations rather than the endpoint, prioritizing reliable cluster foundations, storage, and recovery before delivery improvements or cost optimization. The recommended sequence is to configure managed EKS add-ons, EBS or EFS storage, networking, workload identity, load balancing, and DNS; establish tested backups with Velero and CSI snapshots or AWS Backup for EKS; enable metrics, logs, and audit trails; and adopt GitOps through Argo CD or Flux. The transition requires replacing VMware concepts such as vSphere snapshots, vMotion, VMFS, NSX segmentation, and vCenter workflows with Kubernetes-native approaches including volume snapshots, pod rescheduling, EBS/EFS, NetworkPolicies, RBAC, observability, and declarative deployments. Teams should then right-size inherited VM-based resource requests, use Karpenter and autoscaling to improve bin-packing, implement runtime detection and admission policies, allocate costs by workload or team, and offer developer self-service where ticket-based environment creation remains a bottleneck. A practical 90-day approach emphasizes stabilization and restore testing first, followed by observability, security, and GitOps, then optimization and self-service, while retaining vSphere as a rollback option until restores work and EKS has operated cleanly for at least 30 days.
