Who Approved That Deploy? Audit Trails and RBAC Across Multi-Cluster ArgoCD
Blog post from Qovery
ArgoCD records deployment synchronization details such as commit revisions, targets, timing, and manual sync initiators, but it does not independently establish who approved a deployment, particularly for automated syncs. A defensible multi-cluster audit trail therefore correlates Git pull-request reviews and protected-branch controls, ArgoCD sync events, Kubernetes API audit logs, and cloud IAM activity using the commit SHA, while exporting evidence to durable, tamper-resistant storage because ArgoCD history and Kubernetes events have limited retention. The recommended security model uses SSO-backed ArgoCD access, disables local administrator accounts, separates sync permissions from override and deletion rights, and restricts each AppProject’s repositories, destinations, and permitted resource types. Kubernetes auditing must be explicitly enabled on most platforms, including EKS, GKE Data Access logging, and AKS, and should avoid recording sensitive Secret contents while retaining write operations and RBAC changes. Organizations can build this correlation themselves with a SIEM and notification pipelines, use managed ArgoCD services, add promotion tools such as Kargo, or adopt developer platforms such as Qovery, which provides per-environment access controls and deployment history but does not replace cluster API auditing or function as a SIEM.
