Vercel Preview Environments vs Full-Stack Previews for Agent-Written Backends
Blog post from Qovery
Vercel preview deployments provide branch- and commit-specific URLs, configurable environment variables, and integrations that work well for frontend-focused applications, particularly Next.js projects using Vercel Functions and preview-capable databases. The post argues that coding-agent pull requests often modify APIs, background workers, queues, and database migrations alongside user interfaces, making a frontend preview connected to a shared staging backend insufficient and potentially disruptive. A full-stack preview instead runs all services from the pull request commit with isolated databases, caches, queues, sandboxed secrets, seeded migrations, service wiring, and automatic cleanup. It describes a hybrid approach in which GitHub Actions creates or updates a per-PR Kubernetes backend environment through Qovery, retrieves its API URL, and deploys a Vercel frontend preview configured to use that backend, then removes the backend environment when the pull request closes. The workflow requires considerations such as build-time versus runtime variables, duplicate Vercel deployments, CORS configuration, deployment schedules, and scoped CI tokens. Vercel-only previews are presented as appropriate for frontend-only changes or stable third-party backends, while isolated full-stack previews are recommended when pull requests alter backend services, long-running jobs, queues, migrations, or infrastructure hosted outside Vercel.
