One App Stack, Two Clouds: 7 Tools That Deploy to AWS and GCP Without Two Playbooks
Blog post from Qovery
Deploying the same containerized application stack to AWS and GCP is best achieved through layered architecture rather than trying to make the clouds identical: Kubernetes and Helm provide a portable application layer, while OpenTofu, Terraform, Pulumi, or Crossplane manage cloud-specific infrastructure through a shared codebase and per-cloud providers. The main differences can usually be limited to parameters for identity, ingress, storage, databases, secrets, registries, DNS, and node types, although proprietary managed data services such as AWS Aurora and Google AlloyDB remain difficult to standardize. Kubernetes and Helm are suited to application runtime and packaging, IaC tools address resource provisioning, Crossplane offers continuous Kubernetes-native reconciliation for mature platform teams, and Ansible is better for configuration and sequencing than modeling cloud infrastructure. Teams without dedicated platform engineering resources may use an internal developer platform such as Qovery to deploy a single environment definition into their own AWS or GCP accounts, while retaining Terraform or OpenTofu for organizational networking and other non-container infrastructure. The recommended approach is to maintain one source of truth, test both cloud targets continuously, avoid cross-cloud traffic, and account for separate operational responsibilities such as Kubernetes upgrade schedules and cloud-specific data-service capabilities.
