NIST CSF Alignment for Deployment Platforms: 7 Artifacts to Demand (and Why No Vendor Is "NIST Certified")
Blog post from Qovery
NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 is a voluntary, outcome-based framework for organizations rather than a certification program for software vendors, so deployment platforms cannot legitimately be “NIST certified.” Instead, organizations should evaluate vendors through evidence such as current SOC 2 Type II reports, ISO 27001 or FedRAMP status where applicable, mappings to NIST SP 800-53 controls, identity and access architecture, data-flow diagrams, exportable audit logs, vulnerability-management commitments, and contractual incident-response and subprocessor terms. Deployment platforms primarily affect CSF areas involving governance, asset visibility, access control, data and platform security, monitoring, and recovery, while customers remain responsible for application security, endpoint protection, policies, personnel, and physical security. The article argues that deployment architecture is especially significant: vendor-hosted PaaS products place workloads and related controls within the vendor’s boundary, whereas bring-your-own-cloud platforms such as Qovery, Humanitec, and OpenShift can preserve an organization’s existing cloud account, keys, network boundaries, and native logging, though they may retain more operational responsibility. It recommends treating migration as a continuing risk-management exercise by assessing vendors before contracting, testing evidence and restore processes in nonproduction, documenting residual risk, and regularly reviewing controls as platforms and requirements change.
