Moving Off a Managed Platform to Kubernetes: Which Modernization Services Keep Downtime Near Zero?
Blog post from Qovery
Moving from managed platforms such as Heroku, Render, Vercel, Fly.io, Elastic Beanstalk, App Engine, or Azure App Service to Kubernetes can provide greater cost control, networking and compliance flexibility, and support for more complex workloads, but it introduces ongoing operational responsibilities. The services available fall into four categories: migration consultancies and hyperscaler professional services that conduct the transition, internal developer platforms that improve deployment workflows and governance after migration, and FinOps tools that optimize costs once a cluster is operating. The article argues that minimal downtime depends primarily on a disciplined migration sequence: containerizing applications, building the Kubernetes environment in parallel, continuously replicating data, shifting traffic gradually, rehearsing rollback procedures, and configuring readiness checks, disruption budgets, and rolling updates. Stateless services and workers can generally transition with little or no visible interruption, while primary database migrations require a planned write pause lasting seconds to minutes. Recommended governance measures include identity-provider-based RBAC, GitOps deployment auditing, namespace and network isolation, admission policies, cost attribution, and explicit ownership of upgrades and security patches. For applications with roughly 10 to 40 services, the estimated migration duration is six to twelve weeks, whereas larger or poorly tested estates may require months; the article also notes that smaller teams without concrete scale, compliance, or customization needs may be better served by remaining on a managed platform.
