EKS to AKS: How to Migrate Kubernetes Workloads When You Move to Azure for Better Enterprise Pricing
Blog post from Qovery
Migrating Kubernetes workloads from Amazon EKS to Azure AKS is presented as primarily a cloud-platform reconfiguration rather than a simple Kubernetes move: standard manifests and Helm charts are largely portable, but AWS-specific identity, networking, storage, registry, secrets, monitoring, and application integrations must be rebuilt for Azure. AKS is not inherently much cheaper than EKS beyond its potentially free control plane, with meaningful savings instead depending on negotiated Azure enterprise agreements, reserved capacity, savings plans, and licensing benefits, while stranded AWS commitments and the expense of operating both clouds during migration can offset early savings. The recommended approach is an eight-stage process of inventorying dependencies, establishing an Azure landing zone, adapting manifests, moving images and data, running EKS and AKS in parallel, shifting traffic through weighted DNS, and retaining EKS for two to four weeks as a rollback option before decommissioning it. Stateful applications, especially databases and single-writer volumes, determine the migration timeline because they require replication, dual-write strategies, validation, or planned downtime, whereas stateless workloads can move rapidly. A mid-sized migration is estimated at six to fourteen weeks, and the article argues that multi-cloud platform tools such as Qovery can simplify parallel deployment but do not eliminate data migration, managed-service replacement, or application code changes.
