Summary

Cloud migration cost analysis requires combining discovery and assessment tools such as AWS Migration Evaluator, Azure Migrate, Google Cloud Migration Center, Cloudamize, or Flexera; cloud pricing calculators for projected infrastructure costs; and FinOps platforms including CloudZero, CloudHealth, Apptio Cloudability, Kubecost, or OpenCost for post-migration tracking. The central argument is that these tools generally omit the potentially decisive costs of application refactoring, deployment and IAM redesign, observability and CI/CD changes, dual-running periods, and ongoing platform-engineering staffing. A finance-oriented 36-month total-cost-of-ownership model should therefore include target infrastructure, one-time engineer effort, fully loaded operational headcount, overlap costs, tooling, contingency, discounts, and non-production savings, while comparing remaining on a managed platform, conducting a do-it-yourself migration, and using an internal developer platform. Kubernetes migrations can introduce additional costs through cluster control planes, node overhead, load balancers, NAT and cross-zone traffic, logging and metrics pipelines, security rework, and recurring upgrade obligations. The article recommends phased migrations, explicit assumptions, sensitivity testing, and tracking whether retired legacy spend keeps pace with workload cutovers, while presenting Qovery as a platform intended to reduce migration and day-two operations work within customer-owned cloud accounts rather than replace FinOps analytics tools.
