Building an Adaptive Router for Code Review Depth

Qodo's automated reviewer tool, currently in research preview, aims to optimize the code review process by allocating resources based on the risk and complexity of each pull request (PR), rather than treating all PRs equally. The system uses a router to assess the change's scope and potential impact, applying more scrutiny to changes with high potential blast radius and less to simple, mechanical changes. By incorporating a lightweight language model classifier and deterministic guardrails, the tool evaluates the number of diff hunks, which indicate how dispersed changes are within the code, as a key signal. This approach ensures that complex or widely dispersed changes receive thorough reviews, while trivial changes are processed more efficiently, maintaining review quality (measured by F1 score) and reducing costs, token usage, and runtime. The router effectively balances review efforts, preserving resources for significant changes and providing faster feedback for routine ones, ultimately improving the overall efficiency of the review process.
