ShelterPaws: A win-win for quality assurance and quality of life

Living in Poti, Georgia, where stray animals suffer from neglect and disease, a compassionate IT specialist took action by rescuing and feeding these animals and eventually transporting sick dogs to a distant city for treatment. Witnessing the challenges faced by a local shelter owner, Irina, who struggled with limited resources and no online presence, the specialist decided to leverage 23 years of IT experience to help. This led to the creation of ShelterPaws.org, a volunteer-driven project involving junior developers, QA engineers, and a designer, aimed at building a user-friendly website to support the shelter's needs. The team, passionate about animals and gaining real-world experience, developed a static website to facilitate donations and adoptions, with plans to expand the system for multiple shelters worldwide. As the project progresses, the open-source nature of the work on GitHub allows for global contributions, helping shelters improve the lives of animals and offering junior developers valuable exposure to real-world projects.
