Interview processes in engineering often mirror unreliable practices akin to pseudo-scientific methods like astrology or MBTI, raising concerns about their scientific rigor in predicting job performance. Engineers typically value methods that are both reliable and valid, meaning they consistently produce stable results and accurately assess a candidate's potential to perform well in the role. Many traditional interview formats, such as unstructured "culture fit" chats or generic behavioral questions, have low validity as they often measure a candidate's ability to perform rehearsed scripts rather than actual job skills. In contrast, high-correlation interview methods are tailored to the specific work of the role, such as coding exercises or pair programming sessions, which better simulate real job tasks and thus have a higher correlation with job performance. To ensure an interview method is effective, it should first be tested with existing employees, serving as a control sample to validate its accuracy. This approach allows companies to refine their hiring processes by focusing on methods that truly reflect the skills needed for the job, ultimately improving the correlation between interview results and actual performance during probation.
