Generate images with Pydantic AI
Blog post from Pydantic
Pydantic AI 2.41.0 introduces dedicated image-generation support through the new ImageGenerator API, allowing applications to generate or edit images directly without an agent run using OpenAI GPT Image, Google Gemini through either the Developer API or Vertex AI, and xAI Grok Imagine. The API standardizes provider setup, output handling through BinaryImage objects, common settings such as dimensions and aspect ratios, provider-specific controls, and optional OpenTelemetry tracing, while allowing developers to switch providers with minimal application changes. Image generation can also be made available to agents through the ImageGeneration capability, either through native conversational-model generation, a configured local generator fallback, or custom tools that return both text and image data so agents can continue working with generated images, such as creating alt text. The feature was added after user demand revealed that a shared integration reduces adapter code and maintenance complexity, and its development was shaped by discussions with contributors, including the original implementation work by Egon Ferri.
