Robert Young, director of an analytical chemistry lab at New Mexico State University, shares his transition from being a lawyer to a chemist and Python programmer, driven by his passion for environmental issues. He discusses his focus on chemical analysis and mass spectrometry, particularly the study of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), known as Forever Chemicals, which pose significant health risks due to their persistence in the environment. To tackle the challenge of analyzing complex data sets, Young developed an app using FastAPI and SQLModel, with the guidance of the Pybites Developer Mindset (PDM) program, to allow non-programmers to explore PFAS data. This project not only enhanced his coding skills but also demonstrated the potential of Python and FastAPI in making scientific data analysis more accessible. Young plans to deploy his app soon and is keen on involving more contributors, illustrating the collaborative spirit and real-world impact of modern programming tools.
