Why MCP Alone Isn’t Enough for AI-Assisted Real-Time Development
Blog post from PubNub
PubNub argues that AI-assisted development needs both current platform information and durable engineering guidance to produce reliable real-time applications. Its MCP Server gives coding agents access to up-to-date SDK documentation, authorized PubNub resources, and operational capabilities such as messaging, presence, analytics, and configuration, reducing reliance on outdated training data. However, accurate API usage alone cannot prevent architectural mistakes involving authorization, idempotency, message deduplication, environment isolation, channel design, scaling, or reliability. PubNub Skills are intended to provide this higher-level judgment through reusable best practices and use-case patterns, while MCP supplies version-specific details and live account actions during implementation. Together, the two layers enable agents to begin with a developer’s product intent, form a more secure and scalable architecture, retrieve the necessary current technical details, and build applications such as auctions, multiplayer experiences, telemedicine tools, and delivery tracking systems more quickly without sacrificing production readiness.
