Summary

Accounting API integrations connect SaaS products with customer financial systems to synchronize records such as customers, invoices, payments, journal entries, taxes, and account data, but these integrations are complicated by differences in configurations, currencies, subsidiaries, tax rules, custom fields, approval processes, and legacy technologies. While pre-built connectors for platforms such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, Xero, and SAP can reduce repetitive work around authentication and common API actions, they do not address product-specific data mappings, business rules, error handling, or customer-specific configurations. Custom integrations are often necessary for niche, homegrown, heavily customized, or file-based systems, and must account for financial accuracy through idempotency, reconciliation, safe retries, logging, audit trails, and ongoing maintenance. Unified accounting APIs can simplify access to a limited common data model across multiple vendors, but may omit specialized capabilities and custom fields. The recommended approach is to combine pre-built and custom connectors on shared infrastructure, such as an embedded iPaaS, so teams can reuse authentication, deployment, monitoring, configuration, and operational tooling while remaining prepared for future customer systems that cannot be anticipated.
