The Postmark team has been exploring the integration of Elasticsearch with SmartOS, a platform that offers improved stability and availability. By migrating to SmartOS, they were able to take advantage of its features such as ZFS for data integrity, process isolation through Zones, and performance-focused caching. The team was also impressed by DTrace's ability to provide detailed insights into system behavior without impacting performance. Additionally, SmartOS's Zone feature allowed them to create isolated environments for processes, while automation tools like Chef were used to deploy Elasticsearch quickly and reliably. Finally, the team found Marvel to be an excellent monitoring solution that complemented their use of NewRelic, providing a modern interface and wide range of tunables. Overall, the integration of Elasticsearch with SmartOS has resulted in improved stability, no downtime to date, and efficient storage expansion.
