Assetnote, an Australian information security company, collected nearly 200,000 OpenAPI Specification files to analyze the global API landscape, highlighting the critical role these specifications play in API interactions. Their findings, presented at the 2021 BSides Canberra conference, revealed that many API definitions do not follow the official specifications, with only 79% being valid according to the oas-validator. Postman Open Technologies further analyzed the dataset, discovering insights such as the prevalence of certain licenses, the average number of paths and endpoints in APIs, and the limited use of newer OpenAPI features like webhooks and links. They also created a dynamic map to visualize the geographical distribution of APIs. Assetnote's work underscores the need for better adherence to API standards and encourages API producers to publish their OpenAPI documents publicly. Postman plans to continue exploring the dataset to gain further insights into the API economy and improve how API producers communicate their specifications.
