Summary

Postman has made data from the 2023 State of the API report available on its Public API Network, allowing users to interact with survey responses from over 40,000 API professionals via a public API. This API enables users to explore various questions and comparisons, such as API development priorities across different sectors or investment trends among different professional roles. The data, originally collected through SurveyMonkey and processed using SPSS, has been converted into a CSV file and stored in a PostgreSQL database to facilitate its use through the API. The backend, implemented as an AWS Lambda function, processes user queries by generating SQL queries to deliver results, ensuring privacy by restricting certain data combinations. Hosted in a virtual private cloud on AWS, the infrastructure was built using the Cloud Development Kit library, allowing for easy updates and deployments. A Postman public workspace complements the API, offering collections and requests that align with the report's data tables, with user-friendly visualization facilitated by Postman's tools. This initiative is experimental and aims to gather user feedback for future improvements, including potentially creating time series with past survey data. The effort was co-led by Pascal Heus and Michael Claus.
