September 2025 Product Update: Redesigned Variables, AI Requests in Collections, and Workflow Improvements
Blog post from Postman
Postman has introduced a revamped variables system to enhance security and reduce confusion in API development workflows by eliminating the distinction between initial and current values, thereby ensuring consistency across the API lifecycle. The new system aims to improve workflow efficiency by maintaining synchronization between specs, code, and tests, enabling early issue detection, confident deployment, and reliable post-release monitoring. The updated variable management allows sensitive data like API keys to remain local and private by default, preventing accidental cloud syncing, and offers explicit controls for sharing across teams. Users can utilize toggle switches for individual sharing or the "Share all" option for bulk sharing, while sensitive variables can be marked to mask their values in the interface, with prompts to prevent accidental exposure. Additionally, variables now autosave and support descriptions for enhanced documentation, and the system remains backward compatible, allowing existing shared variables to retain their status while providing options for unsharing.
