How we’re improving performance by combining persons and events

PostHog's 1.41.0 update introduces a significant enhancement by merging persons and events into a single ClickHouse table, which integrates person IDs and properties directly onto events, resulting in up to a 400% improvement in query performance. This update, available for self-hosted users and soon for PostHog Cloud users, eliminates the need for table joins in queries, thereby speeding up results and filtering when involving person properties. Although no UI changes are visible, this modification allows for the creation of insights based on person properties at the event time, a previously unavailable feature. However, self-hosted users may experience increased storage requirements due to additional data storage in ClickHouse. This change aims to ensure PostHog's scalability and efficiency, crucial as the platform, adopted by over 15,000 companies since 2020, continues to track an expanding volume of events. Despite the deployment of this update, PostHog remains open to user feedback for future improvements.
