Backstage is dead

Backstage, a pioneering internal developer portal (IDP), significantly influenced how the industry approached developer portals by providing a flexible, centralized system for platform engineers. Despite its initial success and strong community backing, it faces challenges due to its reliance on a React framework, which does not align with the skill set of many platform engineers, and its inability to integrate diverse data models seamlessly—issues that hinder its practical use and trustworthiness. As AI advancements render traditional UI construction less relevant, the focus has shifted towards agentic engineering platforms that require a real-time context lake, flexible data models, and robust governance frameworks to support autonomous, AI-driven workflows. Although Backstage is making strides in adapting to these changes, its core architecture, which centers the UI rather than the data infrastructure, remains a barrier. To remain relevant, the platform needs to re-architect itself as a context-driven system that facilitates both human and agent interactions, emphasizing real-time data accessibility and policy enforcement instead of merely UI enhancements.
