Summary

PlanetScale has launched support for Postgres and Neki databases on Microsoft Azure, allowing teams to deploy alongside Azure-based infrastructure in Central US, East US 2, and West Europe, while Vitess remains unavailable on the platform. Azure deployments include PlanetScale’s existing capabilities, such as multi-zone high availability, Query Insights, schema recommendations, automated backups, and Metal clusters with locally attached NVMe storage. The launch required substantial engineering work to adapt PlanetScale’s Kubernetes-based architecture to Azure networking constraints, particularly by allocating pod IP addresses in /28 blocks per node rather than individually, increasing network capacity from roughly 65,000 to more than one million pod IPs and reducing reliance on the Kubernetes API during pod startup. The company also addressed API limitations, bootstrap networking needs, storage, load balancing, identity, and backups, validating the design through scale tests involving more than 6,700 pods across over 100 node pools. New databases can be created by selecting Azure during setup, while customers seeking to migrate existing databases can contact PlanetScale support.
