The 45th annual SIGIR Conference on research and development in information retrieval took place in Madrid and online, marking the first in-person gathering since the pandemic began. Sponsored by Pinecone, the event featured a variety of sessions on topics such as recommendation engines, semantic search, deep learning, and the emerging focus on vector search and databases, which are increasingly important in the context of deep learning applications. A notable theme was the emphasis on sustainability in technology, highlighted by the ReNeuIR workshop and a paper titled “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Green Information Retrieval Research,” which explored sustainable research practices. Another significant focus was retrieval-enhanced machine learning (REML), which expands traditional IR methods to include task-driven models and systems, stressing the need for continual updates and efficiency. The ReNeuIR workshop gathered experts to discuss sustainable practices and best methods for neural information retrieval, with plans to publish guidelines on measuring the environmental impact of such research. Pinecone, a sponsor, facilitates high-performance vector search applications, and attendees are invited to the next SIGIR conference in Taipei.
