Zero-shot classification in 2026: from NLI models to decision models
Blog post from Parallel Web Systems
Zero-shot classification assigns texts to user-supplied labels without task-specific training, differing from few-shot methods that use labeled examples, and can be implemented through NLI, embedding similarity, prompted LLMs, or decision models. The traditional NLI approach, exemplified by Hugging Face’s `facebook/bart-large-mnli`, converts each label into a hypothesis and scores whether the input entails it, but requires a separate model pass per label, is sensitive to prompt templates, and does not produce reliably calibrated probabilities. Embedding methods are inexpensive and scale to many topical labels but measure semantic similarity rather than truth, while prompted LLMs can address nuanced rules at higher cost and latency without inherent calibration. Newer decision models return typed selections and per-label probabilities in a single request, offering a production-oriented alternative, although open-weight models such as Laya may require fine-tuning and calibration to perform well. For classifications based on changing external facts rather than input content, such as whether a company is public or a product is discontinued, web-grounded decision systems can retrieve current evidence and citations; the recommended method therefore depends on label volume, required speed, available training data, calibration needs, and whether live web information is necessary.
