Perplexity Decisions API vs. Parallel Decisions API: two ways to ground a decision in the web
Blog post from Parallel Web Systems
Perplexity’s and Parallel’s Decisions APIs both return structured probabilistic answers to yes/no, choice, and scoring questions, but differ primarily in how they obtain evidence and charge for it. Perplexity can answer from supplied context alone at token-based rates or, in web-grounding mode, perform a separate web search for each distinct question at $0.001 per search plus token costs, offering targeted evidence, up to 256K tokens of context, image support, URL fetching, and two model sizes. Parallel always performs one shared retrieval per request, supports up to 100 related questions for a flat $0.001, and returns request-level citations, making it potentially cheaper for many questions about the same entity but less suitable when individual questions require unrelated sources. An example involving Datadog found that Parallel answered four of five questions correctly but missed its employee count because its shared evidence did not include the relevant filing, illustrating why question-specific retrieval can be advantageous. The comparison notes that no published benchmark directly evaluates the two products in web-grounded mode, since available benchmark results tested Perplexity without web grounding, and recommends evaluating both APIs on a labeled sample using accuracy, refusals, latency, confidence thresholds, and cost.
