How to get better web search in Hermes Agent with Parallel’s free Search MCP
Blog post from Parallel Web Systems
Hermes Agent from Nous Research includes keyless web search tools that rotate among Exa, Parallel, Firecrawl, and Keenable, but users can connect Parallel’s Search MCP server directly to gain more structured searches, consistent use of one provider, and access to web_fetch for extracting content from up to 20 URLs. Direct MCP integration lets the model send a natural-language objective alongside multiple keyword queries, unlike Hermes’s built-in keyless adapter, which sends only one query string. Setup involves adding Parallel’s MCP URL to Hermes’s configuration or using a CLI command, testing the connection, and starting or reloading a chat session; the resulting tools can also work through Telegram, Discord, and Slack gateways. The free endpoint requires no account or API key but has anonymous rate limits, while a Parallel API key can be stored in an environment file for higher limits and configurable search settings. Users may instead select Parallel as Hermes’s native web backend when they prefer its built-in tool names and long-page extraction behavior, and they can run both approaches simultaneously. The guidance also notes security protections for untrusted web content, recommends retaining approval requirements for tools with write access, and outlines remedies for missing tools, authentication errors, rate limits, and timeouts.
