Tapes: Free and Open AI Data

Tapes, an open-source system for capturing and managing AI agent trace data, has been released as a dual-licensed Apache/MIT project alongside “cassettes,” a modular integration model for extending trace-data capabilities. Designed to address varied needs from individual developers to large enterprises, cassettes run as microservices alongside a Tapes server, aggregate under a common OpenAPI-based `/v1/cassettes/` interface, and can be automatically discovered by clients such as the new Rust-based tapesctl tool and Paper console. Core capabilities including search, export, and skills are now available as open-core cassettes, allowing users to deploy and customize the stack within their existing tooling. A proof-of-concept OpenClaw skills-evaluation cassette uses historical trace sessions to assess proposed agent skill changes, offering evidence-based feedback rather than relying on context-free decisions.
