AI Is Not a Switch: The Real Path to AI-First Operations
Blog post from PagerDuty
Organizations are increasingly adopting AI technologies, with a focus on achieving meaningful operational integration, or becoming "AI-first," which involves progressing through distinct stages rather than making an immediate leap. According to the 2026 State of AI-Powered Operations report, 59% of organizations are incorporating AI into daily workflows, and 34% are moving from planning to implementation. The journey to AI-first involves three stages: incorporating AI assistants that aid with tasks upon human initiation, trusting AI agents to autonomously pursue goals and provide insights, and granting AI agents autonomy to act while maintaining human oversight in critical decisions. Trust in AI is built over time through proven outcomes and careful scaling of autonomy, while tribal knowledge bottlenecks present challenges that require thorough documentation to support AI execution. Successful AI adoption is likened to nurturing an inexperienced employee, where trust and responsibility are earned gradually. Organizations aim for a hybrid model where AI and humans collaborate, with AI handling tasks it is trusted to manage and humans overseeing critical decisions requiring accountability.
