Pricing for scale: Closing upmarket deals with enterprise commitments
Blog post from Orb
Enterprise commitments are presented as a way for usage-based businesses to adapt their pricing for larger, sales-led customers that require predictable budgets, negotiated rates, and clearer contractual terms. Unlike the flexible pay-as-you-go models favored by smaller companies, commitments establish a defined usage or spending level, often at a discounted rate, and can be structured as prepaid balances drawn down over time or postpaid minimums reconciled through true-ups. Prepaid commitments can improve vendor cash flow and reduce collection risk, while postpaid commitments preserve usage-based invoicing while securing a revenue floor. Effective implementation requires transparent reporting of usage and remaining balances, invoicing that reflects rollover and true-up rules, and early coordination with finance to ensure accurate revenue recognition and auditability. Orb has introduced native enterprise commitment support in early access, positioning the feature as a tool for improving forecasting, enterprise sales, renewals, and customer expansion without abandoning usage-based pricing.
