Why Metadata Matters for Infrastructure Automation
Blog post from OpsMill
Metadata, or data lineage, adds context to infrastructure data by recording its origin, ownership, modification history, and editability, helping automation teams assess whether information such as IP allocations, VLAN assignments, and device records is current and authoritative. Infrahub captures metadata for objects, attributes, and relationships, presenting audit details alongside data in its user interface and GraphQL queries, where users can also filter or sort records by metadata. Its graph-database model is presented as enabling flexible, efficient connections between infrastructure data and its contextual information. Suggested uses include protecting synchronized data from manual edits, supporting compliance audits, consolidating data from multiple authoritative systems, resolving source conflicts, and clarifying ownership across network, security, and cloud teams. Infrahub currently provides fixed metadata fields, supports bulk updates through GraphQL mutations or its Python SDK, merges metadata with branch data, and makes metadata visible to all users, while custom metadata fields are planned for future releases.
