The 2026 Nornir Roadmap Is Open for Community Feedback
Blog post from OpsMill
OpsMill has published its first roadmap for Nornir, the eight-year-old Python network automation framework now used at substantial scale, with the goal of expanding capabilities while preserving its small core, plugin-based architecture, debugging simplicity, and backward compatibility. Planned for the additive Nornir 3.7 release rather than a breaking 4.0 version, the seven proposals include opt-in asynchronous runners, inventories, and processors; enhanced runner support for partial results, monitoring, timeouts, cancellation, and detached work; vendor-neutral typed operations that could simplify multi-vendor automation and provide more controlled interfaces for AI-driven orchestration; improved documentation and plugin discovery; and development practices that support coding agents through specifications and repository guidance. The designs remain preliminary and are being discussed publicly with the community over the next four to six weeks, alongside potential alpha releases, before beta APIs are frozen and a stable release is targeted several weeks later.
