Introducing the New Auto and Auto Code Routers
Blog post from OpenRouter
OpenRouter has launched rebuilt versions of its general-purpose Auto Router and coding-focused Auto Code router, which select models using eleven request-specific factors alongside live pricing, provider health, cache status, governance policies, and benchmark data. The company reports that the new system can outperform the prior router by up to four times on certain benchmarks and makes routing decisions three times faster at the 90th percentile, while Auto Code is tuned for coding harnesses with stronger models, faster responses, and more aggressive handling of failures. Both routers preserve user restrictions such as zero-data-retention policies, provider preferences, allowed model lists, and BYOK keys, then rely on OpenRouter’s separate provider-routing system to choose where the selected model runs. New chatroom and API routing insights explain model choices, model pages display live routing mixes, and public benchmarks compare router performance with alternatives and individual models. OpenRouter notes that routers do not consistently surpass the best frontier model in every scenario, but are intended to provide stable, cost-efficient choices for varied workloads, while users who know the best model for a specific task can continue selecting it directly.
