How Much Does Claude Code Cost? Real Session Costs by Model
Blog post from OpenRouter
Claude Code is free to install, but users pay for the AI model it invokes through a subscription or token-based API billing, with OpenRouter providing model selection, session-level cost visibility, and spending controls. Based on OpenRouter data from the 30 days ending October 18, 2026, median short sessions of two to nine turns cost $0.31 with Claude Opus 5.5, $0.16 with Sonnet 5.5, and less than a cent with Haiku 5.5, while longer sessions cost substantially more. Much of the initial expense comes from writing Claude Code’s system instructions, tool definitions, and project context to a prompt cache; later turns are cheaper because they read cached context, although costs can rise as more files are added. Tests on a small bug-fixing task found that Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku all resolved the issues, with Sonnet costing roughly two thirds of Opus and Haiku costing a small fraction of Sonnet. Suggested cost-management practices include using Sonnet as the general default, assigning background tasks and sub-agents to Haiku, keeping sessions focused and short, evaluating lower-cost third-party models, reviewing actual charges through OpenRouter rather than Claude Code’s internal estimates, and applying API-key, user, or workspace spending limits.
