What is Journald and how to do centralized journald logging
Blog post from OpenObserve
Journald, part of the systemd suite, is a robust logging service for Linux systems that collects and stores log messages from various sources like systemd services, kernel messages, and application logs in a binary format, offering efficient storage, faster querying, and structured logging capabilities. Unlike traditional text-based logging systems, journald's binary format allows for more compact storage and quicker log search and filtering. Logs can be viewed using the journalctl command, which offers various filtering options such as by boot, service, user, or priority. Journald stores logs by default in the /var/log/journal/ directory, with the exact location varying based on the Linux distribution, and it automatically rotates logs based on size, time, or system reboots, with settings configurable in /etc/systemd/journald.conf. For centralized logging, logs from multiple servers can be forwarded to a central log server using tools like OpenObserve, which allows for the creation of dashboards, alerts, and reports, thereby enhancing system monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities.
