VMware vSphere Monitoring with OpenTelemetry Collector on Windows
Blog post from OpenObserve
VMware vSphere monitoring with OpenTelemetry can be implemented on a Windows host by using the OpenTelemetry Collector Contrib distribution and its vcenter receiver to poll vCenter over HTTPS for inventory, capacity, performance, datastore, network, and vSAN metrics without installing agents on ESXi hosts or the vCenter appliance. The process requires a propagated read-only vCenter account, appropriate vCenter statistics levels for detailed disk metrics, secure TLS configuration, OpenObserve OTLP HTTP credentials, and a collector configuration that includes memory limiting, resource labels, batching, retry queues, health checks, and self-monitoring. A central configuration detail is to use separate OTLP HTTP exporters for metrics and optional ESXi syslog: the metrics exporter must not include a stream-name header so OpenObserve creates individual metric streams, while the logs exporter can use that header to route syslog into a named stream. The guide also explains installing and running the collector as a Windows service, optionally accepting ESXi logs over UDP 514, validating scraping and export health through collector telemetry on port 8888, querying normalized metric names in OpenObserve’s Metrics explorer, and troubleshooting issues involving authentication, certificates, statistics levels, collector performance, endpoint paths, and high-cardinality data in large vSphere environments.
