Replacing the Grafana LGTM Stack with a Unified Platform
Blog post from OpenObserve
OpenObserve’s comparison positions its AGPL-3.0 platform as a unified alternative to Grafana’s LGTM stack, which combines separate Loki, Grafana, Tempo, and Mimir components for logs, dashboards, traces, and metrics. It argues that LGTM can create operational complexity through independently deployed services, distinct storage and scaling requirements, three query languages, and limitations around Loki label cardinality, while additional capabilities such as incident response, SLOs, frontend monitoring, synthetics, and AI may require Grafana Cloud services or other tools. OpenObserve is presented as a single-binary or Kubernetes-deployable system using columnar object storage, OpenTelemetry ingestion, SQL for logs and traces, and PromQL plus SQL for metrics, with integrated dashboards, pipelines, alerting, incidents, SLOs, RUM, database monitoring, LLM observability, AI tools, and bring-your-own-bucket options. The proposed migration approach uses existing OpenTelemetry Collectors and Prometheus remote-write configurations to send data to both platforms in parallel, convert Grafana dashboards, validate alerts and queries, and then retire LGTM components; the article notes that feature availability varies by deployment and that some functions, including synthetic monitoring, are limited to OpenObserve Cloud or remain in beta.
