Monitoring Apache Cassandra with OpenTelemetry: Metrics, Logs, and Dashboards

Apache Cassandra is a highly scalable, distributed NoSQL database designed for handling large volumes of data across multiple nodes, ensuring high availability and fault tolerance, making it ideal for real-time applications requiring low-latency operations. Monitoring Cassandra is essential for performance optimization, fault detection, capacity planning, security auditing, and troubleshooting. To effectively monitor Cassandra, the setup involves using OpenTelemetry (OTel) for collecting metrics and logs, with the JMX receiver gathering JVM and Cassandra-specific metrics and file-based log collection ensuring log visibility. The OpenTelemetry configuration file is updated to capture logs from specific directories and collect logs and metrics using the OTLP receiver, sending data to OpenObserve with a custom stream name. Additionally, modifications in Cassandra's environment file enable JMX monitoring, and services are restarted to apply these configurations. This comprehensive approach, including dashboard creation for monitoring node health, latency, resource utilization, and query performance, ensures the Cassandra clusters' reliability and efficiency, allowing for proactive issue resolution and enhancing system observability.
