How to Deploy OpenObserve on AWS ECS Fargate
Blog post from OpenObserve
OpenObserve can be deployed on AWS ECS Fargate as a disposable, production-oriented task containing the main OpenObserve container, a Cloudflare Tunnel sidecar for connectivity, and a debug-shell container for HTTP health checks and operational troubleshooting. The deployment separates runtime from persistence by storing stream data in S3, filesystem state in EFS, credentials and tokens in AWS Secrets Manager, logs in CloudWatch, and permissions in distinct ECS execution and task IAM roles, allowing replacement tasks to restore access to the same state without embedded long-lived credentials. The guide explains how to define compute, networking, ephemeral scratch storage, container resources, environment variables, EFS mounts, startup dependencies, logging, and a health check that reaches OpenObserve through localhost under awsvpc networking. It recommends pinning container versions, sizing resources according to workload rather than copying examples, and keeping sensitive values out of task-definition environment fields. An optional Dex sidecar can add Enterprise SSO through OIDC without changing the underlying EFS-and-S3 storage design, while OpenObserve APIs can support external automated ingestion workflows independently of the ECS configuration.
