Caught Before It Mattered: How a Slow Latency Drift Almost Became a Black Friday Outage
Blog post from OpenObserve
A composite use case from DataElicit Solutions describes how an e-commerce platform using OpenObserve detected a gradual p99 checkout-payment latency increase caused by a library upgrade that subtly delayed connection-pool releases on retry paths. Static thresholds and error-rate alerts did not trigger because latency rose only about four milliseconds per day and connection-pool warnings were nonfatal, but an ingest pipeline parsed wait times from log messages into a numeric field for analysis. Scheduled alerts compared recent six-hour performance with the corresponding period a week earlier, while a composite alert correlated the rising log-based connection waits with the latency trend and opened a single incident. Distributed traces then identified connection acquisition, rather than the payment gateway, as the bottleneck, and comparison with deployment history led to a small fix deployed 11 days before Black Friday. The account argues that baseline-based trend detection, log enrichment, cross-signal composite alerts, and unified logs, metrics, traces, and deployment timelines can reveal slow-developing failures before they become peak-load outages.
