How to Access the Spark UI on Amazon EMR (Step by Step)
Blog post from Onehouse
Apache Spark UI is the primary interface for investigating Spark application jobs, stages, tasks, executors, SQL queries, performance issues, and failures, and Amazon EMR provides console-based access without additional installation across EMR on EC2, EMR Serverless, and EMR on EKS. On EMR on EC2, users open a cluster’s Applications tab or Summary panel and select the Spark History Server, which retains application history for 30 days after completion or cluster termination, while live interfaces require access through an SSH tunnel to the cluster’s YARN ResourceManager. EMR Serverless exposes live or completed-job Spark UIs through EMR Studio’s job-run interface, with managed logs generally retained for up to 30 days, and EMR on EKS provides a View logs link beside each job run unless persistent application UIs were disabled. Access requires appropriate IAM permissions, at least one executed Spark job, and browser pop-ups enabled; common issues include missing permissions, delayed application visibility, disabled persistent UI settings, unsupported EC2 configurations, or expired log retention. Once opened, the UI’s Jobs, Stages, Storage, Environment, Executors, and SQL/DataFrame tabs help diagnose slow, skewed, memory-intensive, or failing workloads.
