Blog post from Octopus Deploy
Octopus is enhancing its dynamic infrastructure capabilities to simplify the process of registering deployment targets in cloud environments. By introducing a tag-driven target discovery system, users can apply specific tags to cloud resources, which Octopus will use to automatically discover and register targets during deployments, thereby reducing the need for manual registration. This new method involves defining tags like "octopus-environment" and "octopus-role" to indicate the environment and role of resources, and using Octopus variables to provide authentication context, ensuring flexible scoping for different environments. Octopus will track and clean up targets that are no longer available, while manually registered targets will remain unaffected. The initial rollout will support Azure Web Apps, Service Fabric, and AWS ECS clusters, with plans to expand to Kubernetes containers and other cloud targets. Octopus seeks user feedback to refine this feature and address potential edge cases, aiming to make the solution intuitive and non-intrusive for users.
