The Octopus Deploy team has developed a new step package framework to enhance the flexibility and efficiency of deploying software using Octopus. This framework, built with TypeScript, allows steps to be created and integrated into Octopus Server independently, resolving previous limitations such as the need for full server upgrades to deploy new steps. The framework introduces components like a CLI, UI definition, input schema, and Step Executor, all contained within a step package that communicates with Octopus Server via an API. Steps can now be versioned and distributed independently, allowing for quicker updates. Additionally, a step package feed has been created for delivering step packages outside of Octopus Server releases. The framework includes a declarative UI approach and supports integration tests using a Terraform-based setup, enhancing the development and deployment process. This new approach allows users to access updated steps more rapidly and without requiring a full server upgrade, ensuring a more seamless deployment experience.
